Notes for James W DAILY


Most Dailys, including James and Rachel, were Democrats andpredominately Baptist.

Residences & events in his life;

Until after 9/1856 Washingto Co, IN They must have been ready to goimmediately after their marriage.

1856 Cooks Mills, Coles Co, IL. According to county history, thefami ly arrived that year via "covered wagon containing all theirworldly possessions and drawn by oxen. In the party was Rachel'sbrother, Emanuel Floyd, and 2 of his aunts, both Crums."

7/24/1860 S Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL, near Mattoon. At census time, hewas a 26 year old farmer with property = $600/300. Rachel was 23,their children were Rachael, 3, and John F, 1. James' brother Josiah,22 , also lived with them while next door was sister Mary and EmanualFloyd followed by their mother and step-father Collison Porter.

According to a grandson, the family, having migrated from the south,were only mildly sympathetic to the Union cause during the Civil War.

8/15/1870 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. It is doubtful James moved buthis property had grown by census time, being recorded as $2400/450. Hewas a 36 year old farmer, Rachel was 32. Children listed were Rosilla(Rachel), 13, John, 11, David, 8, and Lewis, 1/12, birth month ofJuly, with a line drawn through his name, as if to delete himaltogether. Next door neighbors were Johnson Ellison and JosephThomas.

9/12/1880 Same place. The census recorded him as James Dailey,at age46, still farming, Rachel was 42. Children living there were John,21, David, 18, Samantha, 15, Lewis, 10, and William, 8. James andJohn were farmers, David worked on the farm. They lived betweendaughter Rosa and Jerome Taylor and brother Joseph (Josiah) Dailey.

6/11/1900 City of Mattoon, Coles Co, IL. Before that census thefamily had moved to town. James, 66, was then a stock trader. He andRachel, 62, had been married 44 years, she had birthed 8 children butone had died. At home were Rozilla, 42, John F, 42, David, 37,Samantha, 36, Lewis E, 34, Wm R, 32, Cora E, 27. The boys all workedfor the railroad, John and William were brakemen, David was foreman,Lewis a fireman. Samantha was a seamstress. (David was counted ashead of his own family 6 days earlier as a farmer.)

5/4/1910 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. Back in the country, James, 76,was back to farming. He had been married 53 years to Rachel, 72, with8 children, 2 of whom were then deceased. Living with them wasgranddaugher Betha E, 9. They lived between son John and grandsonCharles R.
The 1850 census says he was 15, making his birth year 1835.
