Cleaves owned a machine shop. He was a talented man with machines,alw ays tinkering and repairing, inventing and manufacturing parts.

He was innovative in other ways too when it came to maintenance. Oncew hen the evergreens in front of his house died, he spray painted themgr een. Another time, he used fabric dye to spray paint a couch whichhad f aded.

He was continually buying and selling, everything from lawn mowers, tob oats, to houses.

Norman had completed 4 years of high school, Mary only 6years of sc hool while Mary had 4 and Cleaves, 1. Norman was aself-employed paint er/paper hanger and owned the home which wasvalued at $1800. Other Br anson families in Mattoon were Thomas andWillson(Holigean in 1930); Ve rnon and Gladys; Cleaves and Mary Sue;Jacky and Irene; J Lee and Etta.
