Notes for Simon POWELL

According to the "History and Genealogies of Powells in America,"Simon a nd Jane had 2 other daughters besides Isabel, who lived inCambridge Ci ty, IN, but did not name them.

Residences & events:

1770 South Carolina. Simon's parents, as well as at least one of hisa unts and a first cousin, moved to SC where he was born.

1780 Virginia

1789 Fayette Co, KY. Simon being only 19 years old, probablymigrated w ith his parents. His father was listed in the tax rollsthere in 1789, 1 791, & 1792.

1793 Clark Co, KY. His father moved and Simon went with the family.H e was listed for the first time in the tax list in 1794, then againin 1 797, 1799, & 1800.

1794 Simon and brother, Oner, were surety for the weddings ofsisters, B etsy on 5/19/1794, and Frances on 7/28/1794.

1800 Simon and brothers, Ambrose and Thomas, Jr, along with theirfathe r, were listed on the county tax roll.

1803-1806 Simon was again listed on the tax rolls for these years butw as absent 1807-1809.

1810 Estill Co, KY, where he was listed in the census with a familyco nsisting of 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45(himself), 1 f emale under 10, 1 female 26-45 (Jenny). Down the roadwas George Van B uskirk and farther down was brother Ambrose. Alsoliving in the same c ounty were 3 brothers-in-law, Cornelius Newkirk,Micajah Hall, and Samu el Eaton.

1813 At tax time the Powells in the county besides Simon were Thomasa nd James, probably brothers.

3/11/1813 - 9/11/1813 He served as a Private with Capt Dudley Farris'C ompany of Infantry of KY Detached Militia commanded by Lt Col WmDudley . He was most likely among the soldiers captured andbrutalized by the I ndians in "Dudley's Defeat" on the VermillionRiver because of the 800 m en who followed Dudley, only 170 escaped toFort Meigs, the rest being e ither killed or made prisoners. Thismight explain why he was healthy e nough to answer the call to enlistbut died a few months later.

2/19/1814 Wayne Co, IN. Simon received NW 1/4-S 26 (in Jackson Twp),g overnment land, possibly as payment for fighting in the War of 1812.He r eturned to KY but died the next month, before he could bring thefamily b ack to Indiana. Jenny took the family to IN anyway wherethey cleared t he land and began farming. Their cabin stood on theeast bank of the r iver, south of East Cambridge.

1820 Simon's land was transferred to a Henry Krull by patent deed.

There was a country wide financial crash in 1837 which completelydemor alized values. Although we do not know the financial conditionof Simo n's children before or after the crash, they, like mostsettlers, built t heir own houses, raised their own food, and mettheir
own needs.

In 2004 the current land owner, Jill King, is researching andrestoring t he log cabin on the property. The Cambridge CityCentennial Book suppo rts the above information. However Simon's landwas north of the Natio nal Road and probably contained all the landnow containing East Cambri dge, IN. She knows the original owner ofher land was Simon Powell and b elieve the cabin was his as well, nails in roof rafters date to 1800-18 20.

Some relatives say his death was 2/14/1814 but according to onealleged ly with the family Bible, it was as posted. And since hereceived the I ndiana land on 2/19/1814, the earlier date must beincorrect.

Simon may have been injured while serving in the War of 1812, theeffec ts of which could have contributed to his death. Some soldiersof his u nit were captured and brutalized by Indians before escaping.Simon coul d have been one of them.
