Well Remembered Former Mercer Countian Succumbed to Pneumonia January1 7 at Hepler, Kansas
B. F. Powell and his son, Judge John E. Powell were called to Hepler,K ansas, last week by the death of their brother and uncle, Thomas E.Pow ell, who died of pneumonia at his home near Hepler, Kansas, aftera sho rt illness.
Thomas Eli Powell was a son of Moses Powell, a pioneer of the countyan d was born in Mercer County, Jan. 14, 1854. He was a brother of B.F. P owell and John L. Powell, deceased. He moved away from MercerCounty i n 1886 and has since resided on a farm in Bourbon County,Kansas near H epler. He died January 17, 1923, aged 69 years and 3days. On January 1 3, 1878 he was married to Miss Sarah H. Ballew,daughter of Hilance
Ballew, who was well known to many of our older citizens. At the ageo f 18 he united with the Christian church at Princeton, under thepreach ing of Dr. Samuel Shook, a brother of the late Joseph Shook.
He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, and three children, Joseph T.P owell, in business at Hepler; Lucy Palmer, of near Hepler and theirsin gle daughter, Miss Grace Powell, all of whom were at his bedsidewhen h is spirit took its flight.
His funeral was conducted by Elder James H. Crockett in the FirstChris tian church at Hepler of which the deceased had been a constantand fai thful member for more than half a century.
He was a man of excellent habits, of fine moral character, and thefact t hat he has dropped out of the ranks will bring grief to many ofour rea ders with whom he formerly associated.
