Notes for Joseph Purdy POWELL


Joseph was named in honor of his great grandfather Purdy, on hismother 's side.

Residences & events in his life:

9/6/1863 Moultrie Co, IL. In a letter of the neighbors, theMcPheeter s family, it states: "Joseph Powell has just returned fromMissouri. H e says that they are having bad times where his fatherlives. Samuel r emained at his fathers."

He was active in the issue of roads in the county, petitioning for aro ad to Springfield in 1865, another in Jonathan Creek Twp on6/7/1865, a nd a new road (place unspecified) in 1866.

7/26/1870 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. At census time Josepha nd Elizabeth were both 25 years old. He was a farmer with propertywor th $1800/500. Their children listed were: Perry S, 4; William,2; and L eonidus, 1. Three doors down was Hudson Martin next to LeviSeass, fol lowed by Beverly Cornwelll, Elizabeth's parents.

1873-1874 The date of the move is unknown but it was between thebirth s of daughter Ollie and son David.

6/3/1880 Spring Creek Twp, Greenwood Co, KS was where the next censusf ound him. He was a 38 year old farmer, Elizabeth was 37. Childrenlis ted were Harry S, 15; Wm W, 13; Leonidus H, 11; Ollie M, 7; DavidE, 5; a nd Carl E, 2. Neighbors were unfamiliar names. Living in thesame cou nty was Atwell Martin.

6/1/1900 Glencoe, Butler Co, KS. By the next census the family hadmo ved again. Joseph was 58, still farming, Elizabeth was 57, andstill a t home were Carl E, 21, and Joseph C, 19. Also living therewas 49 yea r old servant Nathan B. Harkness, farm laborer.

Wichita, Sedgewick Co, KS

El Dorado, Butler Co, KS.
The 1870 census recorded Joe's birthplace as MO.
Relatives say he died in Shelby Co, IL but that is doubtfulconsidering h e was in KS shortly before his death.
