Dewey was named for the heros of the day, two naval commanders in theS panish American War which had ended exactly one month prior to hisbirt h: Dewey, for George Dewey, commander of the US squadron whichthoroug hly defeated the Spanish fleet at Manilla, and Schley, inhonor of Winf ield Scott Schley, officer in charge at the battle ofSantiago.

"I wasn't around Uncle Dewey very much. Aunt Pauline really had myres pect! In my youth, I was scared to death of her, she could makeme qui t crying in a second! In later years on the lake with her andBill and J une (Doris' siblings), I really appreciated her sense ofhumor.

9/12/1918 Moultrie Co, IL. Dewey's registration for the draftrecorde d his address at RFD 3, Sullivan. He was a farmer at Sullivanand list ed his father as his nearest relative, same address. He wasdescribed a s medium height, slender build, with grey eyes and blackhair.
4/17/1930 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. Dewey and Pauline livedalon e at census time. He was 31 with a house valued at $8 andoccupation a s farm laborer. Pauline was 26.
At least three, possibly all four, of their children were born in thet enant house on the farm of Dewey's parents.
