Notes for John Nimrod VAN GUNDY


John's middle name was in honor of his Grandfather Neaves.

Residences & events:

Moultrie Co, IL, just west of Bethany. He was a "prosperous farmer"th ere according to his wife's obituary.

6/5/1917 Moultire Co, IL. John registered for the draft, listing hisr esidence at Sullivan and occupation as truck driver for Hagerman &Hars hman, also of Sullivan. He was married but had no children. Hisphysi cal description by the Registrar was short, medium build, withblue eye s and dark hair.

7/21/1917 The Decatur Review reported the drawing for the draft, JohnN V angundy, Sullivan, was number 152.

1919 Following the death of his first wife, he left his 2 year oldson i n the care of his parents and joined the Air Force. There hedecided t o make a career of it and retired with the rank of MasterSergeant, hav ing served in both WWII and Korea.

John remarried twice but neither wife wanted his son, Francis, to livew ith them so Francis was forced to remain with his grandparents untilad ulthood.

Again, a recollection from Dorisgene Webb:

"I enjoyed Uncle John's visits and Aunt Carrie usually came too,bringi ng a drink for dad and pop for us kids. Uncle John had a lotof intere sting stories about the Army. I aways thought he as animportant offic er!"
Two different obituaries said his parents were William and Sarah Van
Gundy.
His funeral was held in McMullin Funeral Home in Sullivan on Friday at
1:30 PM. He was buried with his first wife and her family.
